The national team of Nigeria is controlled by the Nigeria Football Federation (N F F). Nigeria played their first official game in October 1949. The team's first major success was a gold medal in the 2nd All-Africa games, with 3rd place finishes in 1976 and 1978's African Cup of Nations. Nigeria played the World Cup for the first time in the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

In (1980 and 1994) Nigeria won the African Nations Cup . They took third place at the 2002 African Nations Cup, the 2004 African Nations Cup, the 2006 African Nations Cup, and the 2010 African Nations Cup.
