World Affairs: Vancouver's Mobility Test
As a modern West Coast City, Vancouver has had to work hard over the past 20 years to become a pedestrian-friendly and bicycle-friendly city.
Dramatically increased residential densification, an improved bicycle network, an expanded transit system, and policies that prioritize pedestrian and bicycle mobility have combined to make Vancouver one of the highest ranked cities in terms of livability.
The big test is the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. To avoid gridlock, Vancouver's Olympic transportation plan depends almost entirely on locals and visitors agreeing to abandon their cars during the games. The transit system and walking are the main methods of getting around.
Is it working? Have a look at this video from Sunday, February 14 2010. It's Day 2 of the Winter Olympics in Downtown Vancouver. And this is Vancouver, not New York.
